When the next gen consoles are already fixed at a maximum display output of 1080p, does that even matter at this point?  Or are you gonna SLI two PS4s or 720s together and hook them up to 3 monitors?  8GB of RAM on consoles is overkill when your primary display method is a fixed resoultion, and your console and accompanying power brick would need their own entertaiment cabinet because it would be so friggin huge due to the fans and vents needed to keep the damn thing from overheating.

You might as well just drop a grand and buy a gaming PC at that point.

The current consoles are fixed at a max display output of 1920x1080, doesn't mean that many games actually use it though, most are 1366x768 or less.
More memory means that games might actually run at 1080P a year after it's release on the new consoles.

Also Ram consumes relatively little power and outputs bugger all heat, hence why allot of modules can run without a heatsink, but the benefits are massive.
