I'm the opposite. I nearly always draw from my head, and rarely from life.
I'd just practice. Try not to copy other artists work to much. You can learn a lot from them, but you'll want room for your own style to develop.
Don't worry about the finnished product looking less good than a copied picture, that's part of the learning process.
