When something goes Beta it doesn't always mean software, it can be hardware as well.

Hardware problems can't be patched out.....so the proper term for a "console in beta" would be a Prototype.

Most people use the Prototype term when referring to hardware, but calling the console in Beta is also correct.

Edit: I'm not sure about this one, but the term prototype sometimes refers to a hardware that is still in a early stage of development, while the term beta means that is pretty close to the final version.
