They used to be born to rule, but in the case of Great Britain since 1660, our monarch is the face of the country and the commonwealth. She may not seem to do much, but she is too ingrained in our culture to ever abolish and become a republic. I am sure it's the same for the other remaining monarchies, Spain, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Thailand etc.
