For it's time?  Easily the Super Nes.

  • All of the big third party franchises of the day came to the SNES.
  • The graphics and sounds were often at the top of the industry (even more powerful consoles like the Neo Geo failed to pull off some of the stuff the SNES was doing).
  • The controller gave us features that no controller offered before.  Hell, it's the PS1 controller without grips and L2/R2 buttons.
  • It was constantly offering experiences that just felt brand new.

Basically, the Super Nes offered developers the power to make the kinds of games they wanted to make.  Gamers were satisfied with what were the absolute best of the gen at the time.  Third parties were happy.  Nintendo was happy.  It was just an exciting time as we pioneered new territory and nothing felt experimental.  It felt refined.  It felt like they were getting everything right.
