Essentially, either manufacturer could produce a system that was less powerful and more expensive than people here expect; potentially because they're focused on a new user-interface of their own. For example, Microsoft might release a system that was 4 times as powerful as the XBox 360 that was bundled with an advanced version of Kinect and sell it for $500; and, with how few Kinect games are sold and how disappointed people have been with "core" Kinect experiences, there is nothing saying that Kinect-2 would be able to move a $500 system the way Kinect moved a $300 system.
