Our framers constructed the longest lasting and most successful republic in the world. They knew very well what they were doing when they wrote the constitution, and it's evident when you read their works. In fact, I think everybody should read "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine in social studies education, as an American or as a member of any republic. The 2nd Amendment is there to protect us and enable the maximum freedoms so that we can not only live safely, but as we should live - free peoples. That is enough for me. All other arguments are just defensive against those who wish to strip us of our rights in order to control us, or under some fallacious belief that it would better us.

"People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both." - A great man and founder of the political state in which I live, Benjamin Franklin.
