um if someone that breaks into your house with the intent of raping your children and killing you, you shouldnt protect your self because we shouldnt "horn in on someone else's rights." sorry im going to put two bullets right into their chest.

In my world, people are better than that.

I always suspected you didn't inhabit the same reality as the rest of us.

It's the curse of liberalism, i'm afraid. I believe that humanity can better itself from the caveman mentality that everyone from outside my cave is out to beat and kill the people in my cave.

The problem is... a gun ban is not bettering ones self.

In fact, a gun ban if anything prevents people from bettering themselves long term.

In general, the longest and defining changes in culture are done from the people leading the rules, and thereby making such rules meaningless.

When rules lead people, more often then not you see a great rebellion against the rules and progress towards a better society actually styimed for temporary short term gain... or perceived short term gain anyway.

See for example Prohibition.   We were leading into a natural "less booze" society, but then government jumped ahead of the curve with prohibition and it led to booze becoming harder ingrained into public consiousness.   Without Prohibition i'd suggest that you'd find we'd actually have much less problem drinkers today.
