Let's say the $499 is actually making profit for Sony, would it be wise to do this again? It's not like the PS3 failed at it's $599 price tag, it just had a slow start. If they have a great machine with amazing features and a really good line up of launch games this may not be that problematic.

I'm not saying they should do it but let's say they profit after $400, for every million sold that $100 million pocketed. They would also have a lot of give if everything went sour and they needed to cut the price to intrigue consumers a $100 price cut would really make a big difference.

Would it be a good business idea for Sony to do this (pretend you actually own the company and this came up for discussion).

Unless they offered something new (not move but something truly new) it'd be too high a price point. I know people who bought a PS3 for the bluray player alone. Without that behind them, it'd have to focus on the games once again. Whether they could get away with a $500 price point is purely to do now with the quality of the gaming to be found on the console.
