it stops others from trying out different browsers that may lead to other os's. Chrome come sto mind as it is trying to be more than a browser. Also now that browsers have their own search bar it is a chance to get people to use bing more, which does make them money. They advertise windows 8 to highlight the new touch interface and tablets and ultrabooks and laptops. I haven't really seen it advertised for desktops.
