Well videogames do promote violence, at least some of them and of course TV shows, music promotes too. However i think it's up to you if you let that influence gets to you.
My father its in a similar position as your mom, he thinks everyone who plays lots of games (me) will someday kill somebody and even though I demostrated him its up to the person who plays the game, he do not understand and never will.
