I'd say Half-Life 2's story isn't what most people would consider great, it's the storytelling that captivated a lot of people, including me. Of course, Half-Life 1 had a similar narrative style (or lack there of) and that was an even thinner story. Yet it worked brilliantly because the mystery and excellent pacing made you motivated to play it through to the end.

For me, it's not so much the story's content, but moreso the way the game presents itself to the player.
