What was shown at the VGAs was a mixture of both gameplay and pre-rendered, just thought i throw that out there.

And what evidence do you have for that? It isn't something that Naughty Dog have done in the past and we have seen how good actual gameplay looks!

I can't remember what ND do precisely with their cut scenes, but it is not pre-rendered, I think they just have better character models

Most of Naughty Dog's cut scenes are pre-rendered using the game's engine. This allows them to push more effects, more polygons, better anti-aliasing, etc... while keeping a consistent look througout the entire game (unlike games like Final Fantasy). It also allows the console to load the next level while the pre-rendered cut-scene is playing. Making it seem like there's barely any loading at all.

Many developers do that.

We could do with more knowledgeable people on this site.

I thought this was common knowledge, actually.

There are games that don't use pre-rendered cut-scenes, and still look very good, like Heavy Rain. But usually, those games tend to have slow downs and graphical hicups during those scenes. I am hoping some time in the future, games will be entirely real-time and look like the Uncharted series cut-scenes at all time.

I prefer real-time over pre-rendered. No matter how incredible the pre-rendered cut-scene look.
