The demo was good. World, character design and story look very promising from the demo.
It does have some of the unfortunate jrpg traditions, such as inconsequential random battles to slow you down. You can avoid most of them on the world map at least.

What does that mean exactly? Or how is that even a bad thing. The enemies are visible on the map so if you do not want to fight you don't have to. Battles are required if you want to level up your characters and familiars. They are necessary without being overbearing.

One thing I could not stand about Western RPGs such as Fallout and Oblivion, and even a few JRPGs like Xenosaga; is that you can keep going through the game rarely getting into battles unless it is a boss. This is very bad. Not only does that leave you underleveled but half of the fun playing such a game is dealing out battle strategies. I really wish the encounter rates were higher and respawned on the regular. I like to powerlevel which is virtually impossible in most WRPGs.

In the part in the demo where you are exploring corridors (I went the opposite way from where the demo wanted me to go) you have unavoidable battles that require no more effert then to press 1 button to attack. That's the inconsequential part. The enemy hits you for tiny dmg, wait wait wait, kill enemy with 1 hit.

I much rather like the ff13 chapter 11 open area challenge style engagements to level up with. Those simple battles in the demo didn't last longer then a couple of hits, no time to try out new strategies, hardly any xp, and they tend to put you on autopilot not paying attention when a real battle finally comes along.

It's just a demo ofcourse, no idea how the battles are fine tuned for the rest of the game. The boss battle at the vulcano was very good anyway.
