Not too hard to do, so I'll quickly do it, using Gamerankings only, filtering by launch year, using region of first launch. Note that 5 reviews for a game is the minimum I'm allowing. Wii U: Top is Mass Effect 3 at 88.5%, 5th is 86.06%, 10th is 82.36%. Top 5 average is 87.09%, top 10 average is 85.32%. PS3: Top is Resistance at 86.7%, 5th is 81.23%, 10th is 77.7%. Top 5 average is 83.19%, top 10 average is 81.19%. Wii: Top is Twilight Princess at 94.51%, 5th is 76.22%, 10th is 73.41%. Top 5 average is 81.72%, top 10 average is 78.03%. 360: Top is Call of Duty 2 at 89.82%, 5th is 83.05%, 10th is 79.89%. Top 5 average is 86.9%, top 10 average is 83.97%. Xbox: Top is Halo at 95.58%, 5th is 86.18%, 10th is 82.40%. Top 5 average is 88.88%, top 10 average is 86.46%. Gamecube: Top is Tony Hawk's 3 at 91.39%, 5th is 88.89%, 10th is 81.19%. Top 5 average is 90.15%, top 10 average is 87.03% PS2: Top is SSX at 92.17%, 5th is 84.54%, 10th is 79.89%. Top 5 average is 88.06%, top 10 average is 84.65%. Dreamcast: Insufficient information for full analysis (only four rated games released in release year, only one of which has 5+ reviews). Top is Incoming at 62.29%. N64: Top is Super Mario 64 at 96.15%, 5th is 73.61%, Insufficient info for 10th. Top 5 average is 84.54%. Playstation: Insufficient information for full analysis. So Gen 5 is hard to work with, due to lack of solid information that is easily obtainable. I don't want to have to go through and check each title to see if it's a launch title, etc, for a region, and besides, if it launches a year later in a region compared with another, it has an "advantage" in terms of game development, so it's not a fair comparison that way. |
I think that is (more or less) what I was expecting ...
You get a couple of strong first party games, a handful of exclusive third party games, and some decent ports at launch and a variety of licensed crap and shovelware. With a system like the Wii U that launches with so many titles, your launch line-up may be as strong (or stronger) than most systems but with a larger line-up of games that includes many more bad games drags your average down.
