The only thing that I can see saving msft in the long term is an opportunity that just falls into their lap.

One possibility of this would be a Sony breakup, as the company is already in dire straits, and msft purchasing the gaming division which would give it two thirds of the market and many studios to bully Nintendo around with.

I didn't realise that a company that had a huge increase in their market share, managed to make a profitable console, and has cemeted their image as the "console" in the US was in need of saving. Must mean some other companies are already dead in the water by that metric.

No.  The reason why msft has done so well is that overall, the entire company has been very healthy, they just have had a lot more money to work with than the other two, but this is starting to change if you're talking about market shar which soon translates into weakening finances, which gives the competitors the opportunity to take more share away. and sorry but msft's use can't do the apple thing of thriving without a signicant market share.  It's no Apple.

If and when customers start moving to apple computers or any other msft alternative, then the company will weaken.  You wouldn't have said the same thing about Sony in 1990 either bc they were still selling a lot of Walkmans then, but look at what declining marketshare has done to the former king of electronics.
