By being informed.
Countless scienfitic studies have shown that when you take out as many confounding vairables as possible, more guns tends to actually decrease crime. (That is with long term studies that show changes when gun laws are put in place and removed.. and comparison of similar areas where one gets gun control laws and the other doesn't. Or one area removes such laws.)
For example, you were talking about countires gun ownership and violent crime right.
US states are closer to each other then the countries in the world are correct? Far less confouding variables and social differences.
Well when you correlate gun ownership and violent crime in states you get.
Internationally is a pain because well... different cultures and such, and depending on which countries you use you get differnet results.
Generally people pick a few countries with low murder rates and low gun rates and compare it to the US.
Now to further blow your mind... If you use all OCED countries you get something that looks like this.
