I always take examples of Lord of the Rings on one side, which is PG-13 fantasy, and made for wider audience, and Game of Thrones, also fantasy, which would probably be rated NC-17 if it was theatrical release, on the other. They both have their distinct values and differences, and it would be foolish to call one or the other better, but they do offer completely different tone which simply suites different tastes.
