You don't have to be the sharpest spoon in the fridge to know having a separate team for the MP component won't detract from the SP. Don't know why people ever complain when such is the case. I remember the Spec Ops developer complaining as they had to relocate resources from their SP team to work on a MP component as requested by the publisher.
