Have you not been paying attention?

Hardware sales YOY are massively down across the board

Software sales YOY are waaaay down across the board

More developers are out of work than ever

New IPs are pretty much at a standstill

Tablets and mobile devices continue their rise.

The industry is hurting bad and needs new consoles to revitalize it ASAP, this gen has already gone on too long

 

honestly this is the first gen where i've actually paid attention to these things but i don't really expect more expensive consoles to help with these issues unless there is serious incentive to upgrade for consumers

last time that incentive was hd gaming primarily in addition to a few other new features 

i guess i just figure that more time will enable sony and microsoft to prepare more features that help to differentiate the newer consoles from their predecessors while allowing them to keep costs relatively low
