More like Nintendo didn't do a good enough job launching the new product if people don't even realise it is a new product.  Should have called it Wii2 or an entirely new name, made it clear is a different product and not an extention.  They made same mistake with DS/3DS, people presume was just a DS with 3D, even forced Nintendo to make adverts that made clear was a new console.  I bet WiiU has similar ads in near future.

You are wrong.  It has already happened.  Nintendo is trying to make distinction between the Wii and Wii U with their advertising.  They are calling it a next gen console in their ads.  Nintendo has to inform the misinformed public.

Calling it a next gen console isn't good enough, every console does that.  With 3DS they made very clear 'this is a 3DS not a DS'.  I bet they have a 'This is not a Wii, is a WiiU' type ads.

People have been going into gaming stores since the beginning of time asking if a PS2 game can play on their PS1 or if a Xbox 360 game can play on their Xbox.

It's not some big new issue like you seem to think it is.
