I don't think nintendo is necessarily in direct competition with the ps3/360 in that sense. For the system to be a success, I think it has to attract a faire portion of the 140m people who currently own a PS3 or 360. Although new markets are of course going to be a factor as well.

But it is, as wii fans have been saying for years. It is a console being sold at the same time, of course it is competing.

Wii U is an 8th gen console. PS360 is a 7th gen platform

So you think that they are not competing in sales or what?

To an extent of course its competing, but I would very confidently bet that a large portion of the 400k or so Wii U's that have been sold, have been bought by people who've already invested in current gen systems. A new 360 bundle (regardless of how cheap it is), does not compete for the dolloars of a individual who already owns a Xbox 360. When the Xbox360 launched, for the most part it was not competing with the ps2 for sales. Most people that own a 360 in North America today probably also owned ps2. Its part of the logic of how console cycles work, hardware reach satuation levels and new hardware is released for those users to now adopt. Thats one of the major concerns people have raised with the Wii U, Nintendo hasn't effectively positioned it as a successor to ps3/360, nor have they really pushed it down its own lane like the wii.

But for new markets (kids/uniformed casual gamers maybe), then yes it is a competing product and the 360+kinect maybe more enticing then wii U+ Wii U pad.
