Half-Life 2 has since been at least equalled in terms of quality (although it's still the best for it's time) but WoW is still easily the best MMORPG out there and it doesn't look like anything can dethrone it. Even Guild Wars 2 did not have a big enough impact and it was the one having the highest odds.

The best or simply the most popular? At this stage, it doesn't matter what the quality is, people are invested in the game & expansions.

I played WoW when it launched and a couple of times afterwards, vanilla was horrible. It got way better over time, but unfortunatly I have grown bored of it.
