As for belonging to a faction, its like a sports fan. You identify with your "team" and cheer them on to victory

This.

One of the things I like in the sports is the rivality between the fans... I love to cheer and talk with my coworks of oposite teams... when won or loose the things get even better... that's fantastic.

But if someone only watches the Yankees play, or only watches Manchester United play, is that person a baseball or football fan? Or is he just a fan of a jersey?

They are a fan of a team. Not a jersey. I do not miss any Kentucky basketball games and it has nothing to do with the jersey. I graduated from there, I grew up a fan, I will die a fan. Sure, I check out the competition from time to time and watch the big games, but mostly I stick to watching my team, because it doesn't matter how well other teams play, it matters how well mine does.

You ignore the fact that in any game, there are two sides, and the other side changes with each game. So you can't only watch one team as there are always two and the opposing side changes.
