Insomniac isn't the only R&C developer either, so it's clear that Sony (and not Insomniac) tried to expand the series.

Insomniac doesn't have to make R&C if they don't want to. Yet they've made every single R&C, aside from the PSP installments. They could have stopped making R&C games back with A Crack in Time. It's hasn't been Sony's decision to make them release so many games. That's completely Insomniac.

I don't believe it. Fact is Sony owns the IP, they likely want to milk the franchise so they told Insomniac to make game after game or else they would give it to other developers. Now others could ruin the franchise and Insomniac's reputation so they decided to make'em themselves.
I doubt they had fun pumping out R&C games every year.

Either way, this franchise has been extremely milked.
