I think it has more to do with Dev cost. Why would sony make a console that supports graphics so good that dev cost would skyrocket killing any potential profit. I think the Wii taught everyone the simple fact that fun factor is what sells, while graphic can increase the fun factor immensely it is not the end all be all (another example, see WoW, graphic are going on 8 years old there)

Wii- 72 million 3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases
360- 37 million Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak
PS3- 29 million Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut
