And like it or not it is a business's strategy to get these games in the customers hands. They don't care how, what is sold is sold. Do you think it is some kind of coincidence that only 1st party games basically get bundled? That is there way of getting more customers. |
Actually, it's pretty easy to figure out which ones are bundled - at least the major ones.
Wii Sports and Resort were bundled with the Wii significantly. I'd venture to say about 60% of them were bundled, at a minimum. That'd cut off about 60-65 million units sold, or more.
Comparatively, with Sony and Microsoft, you simply have to go look at Black Friday ads from the past few years to see what titles are suspect, and correlate them with anomalous increases during the holidays - like LittleBigPlanet and Forza 2.
As for 1st party games getting bundled, its pretty easy to figure it out. They don't pay royalties on those games. So the cost to the company is essentially printing the disc. So the cost is ~$3 if that per game. It increases the percieved value of the pack without increasing the price. Its why Nintendo was so incredibly profitable when the Wii launched - it was charging about $50 more in NA than in Japan, yet it did so only because Wii Sports was included, costing Nintendo about $3-4 to actually do.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
