I don't get this? You need to have your PC hooked up to the tv to play in big picture mode? I can already do this? Steam for linux excites me a lot more. I wonder how many other developers will follow.

It's likely for when the "steam box" comes. Big Picture mode makes navigating Steam incredibly easy, and efficient. For a typical gamer, regular steam isn't difficult what so ever -- to a casual though... the interface is challenging.
