I think it'd be easier to just induce lucid dreaming chemically. Can't be that difficult. That way it would be interactive as well and you wouldn't need expensive hardware to interface with and interpret the dream. It also avoids the problem of dreams being fragmented and nonsensical when viewed objectively.
And no, films wouldn't be out of business because what you're really buying is someone else's professional capability to write and deliver a story. The availability of cheap handheld cameras and editing software didn't change that.
