It can be hardly considered Archaic gameplay, otherwise one could argue that almost every genre nowadays also is composed of vastly over-used and archaic methods. There isn't a single genre that has trully evolved over the years, JRPGs aren't the sole exception.
Now, if you say that most JRPGs have failed to streamline or adapt to modern standards or audiences, then I'll give you that.
