It has only been one guy who said that and he got his thread shredded to pieces No it is not failing and it has 40 million gold subscribers. It is a billion dollar service so no it is not failing.

40 million?  That's nearly the size of the 360 installed base.  Are you sure about that?  It would mean that an overwhelming majority of 360s out there are linked to a gold account.  I have trouble believing that.  Isn't gold actually unavaliable in some regions?

Yes I'm positive.  They have 35-40 million a year.

Sorry, just looked it up, those are the numbers for LIVE accounts, NOT gold accounts.

"Ballmer said that of those 66 million Xbox 360 consoles, there are 40 million users who have signed up for an online Xbox Live account. That's a pretty good connectivity rate.

Of course, in order to do simple things like play online games and stream Netflix videos, users need to pay for a premium Xbox Live Gold membership. Ballmer did not say how many active Gold members there are."  http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-entertainment-brief/60687-xbox-live-users-topple-40-million

In 2010 the number of LIVE accounts was around 25M, with Microsoft saying that around half of those were gold.  I doubt the percentage has strayed all that much, so it's probably 20M gold accounts, give or take a million or so.
