No, it's definitely an escort. It's exactly like Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon before that started the Tales of the World subseries.
Also...Ratatosk was in ToS? Well that person originally complaining that it came out of no where has nothing to complain about, but I really can't remember anyone that could be Ratatosk.
