Well fandom to the point of isolationism doesn't do you any favors, but dedication to one platform has its perks like consolidation of funds and interactivity between various devices such as the PS3 PSP PSV and soon to be PS4. The reason I stay away from Wii this gen is due to hardware, the resulting software issues because of that, and the UI. I stay away from the 360 because of Xbox live and the UI. I've owned a PS3, Vita, DS, PS2, Xbox, GBA, PS, N64, Genesis, Gameboy, NES, and an Atari 2600. Sony though provides me with the overall benefit for my dollar and I tend to lean their way, and for good reasons.

I wouldn't mind having a Wii U myself, it looks pretty good, but I'd rather spend my money elsewhere, not because I'm blind to other gaming companies. It's never good to force yourself out of something, but it isn't good to get something for the sake of diversity if it challenges your over return on value.

Paying half in for a Wii U sounds like a good deal if you're up to sharing. If you want it and have the money do it. If you don't have the cash and it would be best spent on your current hardware do that, though its for a girl so the choice is probably already made :D

Correction on bolded; "the reason I stayed away from Wii last gen".
