This.  You don't get a notification of friend requests if you add the other user through the friends tab.   It only does it through Miiverse.

Yep, the notification is nice.  I have a habit of doing it on friends list still though.  I suppose in the future I'll try and do it on Miiverse more.  That being said I am pretty sure I added everyone on the list (through the friends list).
