The reason I'm doing this is because it is hard to believe people about a new console because most of the time they will just try to hype it up to justify their purchase. Then you have other people who will bash it because they don't like the company. So here is an unbiased opinion of my experience with the new WiiU
So I recieved my WiiU at approximately 11 A.M. yesterday. No this is not enough time to give you a full review of the console itself so I will give you my impressions of the WiiU and the gamepad.
First thing is first, the console itself looks nice. I was a little surprised at the lenghth though. It is about 1 foot long is my guess while the width is probably around 8 to 10 inches. I have it sitting on top of my 360 (original) and beside my PS3 (phat) where it looks relatively small compared to them. Overall the design is alright in my opinion. Nothing to complain nor brag about.
The gamepad itself is very responsive and accurate. The screen is nice and it feels nice as an actual conroller instead of that waggle mote, I mean wii-mote. I think it is a great addition to gaming. Of course this doesn't answer the question if it works good with games which I'll get into in just a moment.
When I first turned on my console the first thing I had to do was update it, no big deal right? Wrong! Yeah we complain about the long updates on the PS3, well that looks to be the same for the WiiU. It took me two hours to update. While this probably has a lot to do with my sluggish average internet providor but that seems to be about how long it takes me to update my PS3 as well. In the meantime X360 takes me around 5-10 minutes to update so this is what my comparisons are going on.
Anyways after it finally finished updating the next thing I had to do was make a nintendo ID. my console froze! The gamepad went completely unresponsive and I could not power it off through the gamepad or console. My only option was to unplug the power chord. Not a good sign, but when I turned it back on it was ok, nothing was wrong with my console, so nothing to much to complain about. Just a little aggravating at the most.
This is when I setup my gamepad as a universal remote basically. This is by far the coolest feature I have seen on any console. It was super easy to setup. It asks what brand your TV is and what your Cable/satelite providor is and then bam it's hooked up. I can now turn on my TV, Cable box, adjust the volume, change the channel, and change the input of my tv from the gamepad. I don't know why I think this is so cool but I love it.
Another feature that I thought was great was the internet. It is basic and super fast. I wasn't expecting it to run so good. I haven't tested it too much so I'm sure it has problems but so far it runs both facebook and youtube flawlessly. I thought it was kind of cool that when you load a youtube video it goes straight to full screen. something that isn't something to brag about but cool none the less. Either way it loads every video without stopping so that was a plus.
Speaking of features I was dissapointed that it has no camera application. Maybe I'm wrong on this but I just think it should be a standard to put a camera application in something like this. If you are going to use a tablet for a controller it better be up to date like a tablet on the market regardless if that is your competition or not.
Then there is the mii's and the Mii universe thing. I really didn't get into this more than a few seconds because Mii's are still as ugly as ever. I still find these things to be little obominations. While this is just my opinion that is how I feel about those little monsters. And really what is up with there hair. I mean come on, no options and straight up ugly.
Now for the gaming. Now I've only played one game so far so I can't say to much about this and I will definitely have to play more before a full review but I played New Super Mario Bros U yesterday. I originally pre odered ZombiU but canceled it due to the lack luster reviews. So I am just stuck with New Super Mario Bros for the moment. Playing a game like this it's pretty obvious that I can't say much about the graphics. All I can really say is that it looked clear. New Super Mario Bros uses the gamepad as a second screen where it mimics your TV screen. The picture was nice and there was no delays. However I wanted to see how far I could go while still playing the game. I walked out to my hall way and lost connection! Seriously that is like 15 feet away. I guess it struggles with signal through walls. That is kind of dissapointing. None the less I found myself not using my TV but instead using the gamepad laying in bed. It felt like I was playing a handheld rather than a console. That is pretty cool so I do like the mirror screen feature. Now I know they're is plenty of other ways they have used the gamepad but I can't comment on them at the moment.
Over all the WiiU has been good so far but with a few minor complaints. My reccomendation though would be wait to buy it. While New Super Mario Bros U is cool it is nothing to buy a new console for. It has a nice library so far like Rayman Legends, some ported games, and Scribblenauts. However I don't see any of these games as must buy games. Just nice games to get if you have the console. So I'd say wait until you see a must buy game but it appears to be a solid console with a good future a head of it.
