That's a pretty broad generalisation, since:
1. During the middle ages, the middle eastern area was very tolerant towards all religions. Jews, Christians and Muslims were all living together.
2. The Islamic faith includes Jewish and Christian holy doctrines as well as their own. They are all essentially part of the same family of monotheistic belief. Chritianity branched from Judaism, and Islam branced from both of those. It's merely a continuation of the same story, but with different perspectives at key points.
The Muslims I've met in real life just want to live their life happily like the rest of us. Their leaders denounce all forms of violence from all sides. These are the silent majority that the media refuse to acknowledge.
