Sadly PS4 won't be able to do this as the 3D spec doesn't support 1080p anything over HDMI. 1080p @ 24fps for bluray is max it can do. Only connection allowing for 1080p 3D gaming is dual link DVI.
Also, even if magically they decided to include a Dual Link DVI port on some new TVs, there is no way in hell next gen will be able to do 1080p 3D @60 fps with an AMD APU. You'd need a latest Intel i5 and a GTX 680 to do that.
Otherwise, carry on with rumors... |
That quote is from a Sony statement about the dev kits when it leaked a little while ago. Anyway, it could mean 1080p at 60fps "and" 3D. Whether that means 1080p at 60fps during 3D, idk. Maybe they are shooting for that, but given certain limitations will only be acheived by people with the proper set up. It doesn't mean that it is what everyone will have, just a benchmark for what it can be capable of.

Unless they invent a new TV plug, or allow for dual HDMI cables to be plugged in to brand new 4K resolution TVs or something, they technically just can't do 3D 1080p @ 60 hz. Not enough bandwidth to do it over HDMI.
Most people with PCs that do 3D gaming (like myself) have been bitching about this for years now, as we can't buy a brand new 3D TV and play at the same 3D Quality we are used to playing on dedicated dual link 3D monitors.
If they are able to do a stable 720p 3D at 60 FPS, it will be a big success to be honest. That means games will run at 1080p 60 fps in 2D, which is the most we can ask for next gen. This is the maximum supported by 99% of TVs available and sold for the next 5 years at least.
