Umm no, its a well known fact people buy based on popularity, pre-conceived notions. Why would so many more spend 100 more on an inerior tablet? Marketing advertising, falling for hype.... It's this pack mentality people have over buying products, even if there are better options. This is a known fact.
Apple is done a good job of making themselvs the It thing to get, even after it has been surpassed. It's peoples mentality, once it gets that stigma it's hard to break.

I agree people do buy based on popularity, but in general people wouldn't buy a product based on popularity alone, there needs to be some substance as well.
One thing you need to address is that the iPad in general isn't an inferior tablet, but is in fact the market leader technically.
Although Apple will need to address iOS as a priority as it is beginning to look and feel outdated and IMHO Windows 8 has the significant edge.

The ipad is no longer a superior tablet, Surface, Nexus 10 see to that and this thread is about the nexus 7 a far superior 7 inch tablet to the ipad mini. Superior product, lower price still doesnt sell as well,..... sats it all.

Have a look at some of the other posts in the Mobile section and you will see that "technically" the iPad 4 is better than the Surface and Nexus 10.
Also how exactly is the Nexus7 far superior to the iPad mini?
