Is it a consequence to Sony being most head first into digital distribution as a console? I mean the X360 has digital purchases as well but they don't highlight it as much and don't have things like PS+ changing consumer behavior to be more and more comfortable downloading and getting benefit of many games at their fingertips with no disks to swap or pre-installs to play.

Good question, and I think the answer is no.

If I ponder a guess it is the fact that this holiday season you'll have 4 home consoles on the market, the Wii will be discounted, the Wii U a new release, the Xbox 360 will be discounted, and from what I can gather at this point no major discounts for the PS3.  That puts a lot of emphasis on Nintendo and Microsoft.

As I've said elsewhere, it surprises me because, based on sales, I would believe it would be Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, in that order from greatest to least, that get the shelf space.
