It might be that Nintendo is counting on Nintendo fans and core gamers to pick up the system, so they don't advertise too much to the general public. Maybe they count on the core to get the casuals to play the system, and seeing how fun it (hopefully) will be they decide to get it as well. That's why they won't release Wii Fit U until next year: thats when the general public will have noticed Wii U

The media knows what the WIi U is and Nintendo is marketing it, just not as vigerously as last gen. Secondly, I think its too complex a concept for the casuals to understand unlike the Wii. The Kids will definitely have to get their parents to buy it if they can look past the 360 and PS3. Definitely the Nintendo core have already sold this out because no matter what, it's still Nintendo, but what the panel is worried about is next year and the year after that. They will need to win over a certain amount of casuals. They also brought up that the core who own Xbox 360's and PS3's that play COD mostly wont shift and the COD will sell underpar. Multiplatform games isn't a selling point and is only as potent as Microsofts "Better with Kinect" deal.

I don't understand what's so complex... I got it the first time I heard the rumors of a control screen. I think that with each year that passes we'll see more and more of those casual titles. Many gamers will buy the Wii U because it's new, and we haven't got a new HW in YEARS! Others will wait for PS720 - but I personally think those 2 systems won't be a major leap over Wii U; this means Wii U will get good ports and will be the cheapest option, thus driving sales.

To be honest, we dont know many casuals graduated to the typical controller format and to have a screen added only adds to the complexity. First they have to learn to use the controller, then they need to learn to look down to see the map or alternative view to make important decisions. This console is going to go over better with the Nintendo core than it will casuals for sure. People tend to graduate from Nintendo products to more complex forms of gaming, much like myself and many others. This time Nintendo might have created the perfect console to graduate from Wii, but haven't had a plan to keep those who dont want to upgrade to more complex control standards. Hypothetically speaking (because we don't know what next year will bring) in wanting both the hardcore and the casual, they could've risked the casuals by marketing themselves more as the console with the better alternatives for the core. In my eyes Nintendo needs more core gamers with the third party sales they've shown. After that win over the casuals.
