I'm no mario expert, but SMB has always been a 2D platformer.

You seem to be talking about 3D platformers like Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy, which aren't the focus of the thread. In any case though, how did Crash Bandicoot fail? Crash has always sold 6-7 million (not too much lower than 3D Mario games). 

As for Jak & Daxter, how can you say that's directly aimed at Mario, which it's a mix between shooting, platforming, driving, etc. The only similarities it has with Mario is it's cartoonish look (which many games had back then), and the fact that it had platforming (again, a common occurence). Are those sole similarities enough to say it was directly aimed at Mario. Are all 3D cartoonish platformers directly aimed at Mario?
