I went into LBP with great enthusiasm. What I found was a soulless, joyless experience with awful controls and menu designs. The music is good, and the art style is nice, but it all ends there for me. There is no comparing it to Mario, not for a second.
Turns out that LBP Karting and PSASBR are the same way, so no surprises there.
To the OP, Sony did make their own SMB game, and it was a failure by comparison.
