Why did Sony go with Super Smash Bros. too instead of Super Mario Bros. too?

So have Sony fans just admitted LBP is a copy of 2D Mario? The second sentence in the op pretty much as for a Mario clone. Im sure Sony would rather sell millions of copies like Ninty does with Mario, then get good review scores and their franchise still sell less and less.
