Why did Sony go with Super Smash Bros. too instead of Super Mario Bros. too?

It would appear that the newer installments of Mario is inferior to LBP:

BUT looking at the big picture:

Clearly Super Mario Bros. is better because that's what the GAMERS says, not any bribed/biased reviewer.
