Why did Sony go with Super Smash Bros. too instead of Super Mario Bros. too?

Sometimes this site is nuts. CTR was and never will be better than Mario Kart. Only Diddys Kong Racing comes close. With Sega Sonic Allstars Racing in 3rd. CTR after all these.
