Sadly enough, I began working on a similar idea many years ago (after playing Um-Jammer Lammy) where you would plug your guitar into your sound card through the microphone in and it would detect the note you were playing; unfortunately, this was (roughly) 1999 and I couldn't get my PC to accurately detect the note being played in realtime and I gave up due to frustration ...
