Good for them! Of course, a lot of changes will be needed for it reach the standards of American states.

Who votes for independence of the U.S anyway? :-O

Mississippi the poorest state right now isn't that much better off then Puerto Rico.  Also when it comes to tourism I would visit Puerto Rico before I visit Mississippi.  And I drove through Mississippi before on my way to Orlando, Florida.  The worst strech of I -10 was definitely in that state.

I live off I-10 in Mississippi and it's 95% trees.  There is gulfport which looks nice and diberville which is just shopping centers.  The poorest city you'll pass is Moss Point and that exit is food and hotels.  There is one exit with a truck stop and scrapyard.  I-10 was completely repaved after Katrina and never had major bumps.  Thus I can conclude you just made up that state.  I travel from east Mississippi to New Orleans once a week and travel the on I-10 the entire way.

I'm not saying Mississippi doesn't have really crappy sections but the Gulf Coast mostly has money and is completely different from the rest of the state.  You should have said you traveled on I-59, then I'd conclude you weren't making stuff up.
