Thing is that PS2 was doing very well at a similar point in time. People are surprised to see how quickly a generation leader drops off compared last generation's leader and to the second and third place consoles.

PS2 is an exception, and look at how well the PS3 sold initially. Wii sales dropping off so sharply are probably an indication that Wii U sales will be very strong. It's a normal, healthy part of the shift to the next generation.
