I started as the swordsmith, that and the cleric have by far the best stats.  (12 total each, the hunter has 11, all other classes have 10).  

And I do get swords, b ut they suck compared to what I have already.  

How many missions are there? I've done like 12 and am still on chapter 1! 

12 mission and still at Chapter 1? You probably replayed a mission or two since chapter 1 has 9 missions. Here's a quick count

Chapter 1: 9 mission

Chapter 2: 9 miwwionw

Chapter 3: 11 missions

Chapter 4: 10 missions

Chpater 5: 10 missions

Chapter 6: 10 missions

Chapter 7: 10 missions

Chapter 8: 10 missions

Chapter 9: 8 missions

Extra Quests: 31 quests (these are the dlcs released in Japan and included already ingame)

As for weapons, its pretty random. If you're lucky, you'll probably get a good weapon drop with nice skill comination soon. If you're one of those unlucky ones, you can be farming for a month and still not get what you're looking for

On a side note, what sword are you using anyways?
