Did you reboot the phones, close all apps, and do all the required things to make sure that one of the devices wasn't already running applications in the background? It takes a lot less time to "open" an app if it's already stored in memory.
The first time I open the Facebook app on my iPhone, it takes a little over a second to open. If I'm calling it from memory and re-opening it, it's instantaneous.
This is why "real world" tests often fail. People don't take the time to control the test and just use the devices as-is.
